# Care for singers and the voice, over time and in emergencies

Jean-Marie Legé, the osteopath of CALYP’s Voice Clinic, learned singing himself as a child, at the Notre-Dame de Paris choir school.

## If you lose your voice

A sudden loss of voice calls for an urgent examination by an ENT doctor or a phoniatrician, who checks the state of the vocal cords. Until then, stop singing. If you also have difficulty breathing or swallowing, call 15 (or 112).

Jean-Marie Legé then sees singers urgently, in addition to that medical care: call or text [+33 6 68 80 57 39](tel:+33668805739).

## Ongoing care

Outside emergencies, he follows singers as part of a long-term course of treatment.

> […] His approach as a specialist in caring for singers is simply remarkable. His sessions do you a world of good: they work deep down to release the tension in the body and unblock the production of the voice, which brings incredible vocal and physical freedom. […]

## The atlas and a “veiled” voice, a link seen in practice

> […] I have observed that when the first cervical vertebra, the atlas, slips sideways, the patient’s voice becomes ‘veiled’ and tires easily. And yet there is no established relationship in the anatomical or physiological map.

A veiled voice, or one that tires quickly, should first be examined by an ENT specialist or a phoniatrician.

## An osteopath in the Voice Clinic team

CALYP’s Voice Clinic brings together an ENT surgeon, a phoniatrician, a psychiatrist and an osteopath: Jean-Marie Legé. There he supports singers and people with vocal difficulties, alongside Adeline Toniutti. Diagnosing the vocal cords is a matter for the ENT specialist and the phoniatrician.

He also works closely with Estelle Moltenis, a licensed physiotherapist for professional athletes and singers ([her profile on calyp.fr](https://www.calyp.fr/en/team/estelle-moltenis/)).

> […] His approach, and the way he communicates with doctors, are a great asset. For a singer like me, he manages to reduce, or even remove, certain blockages in the body. Singers, go to him without a second thought! […]

## Vocal cords, a matter for ENT specialists and phoniatricians

### Can an osteopath treat the vocal cords?

No. Lesions of the vocal cords, such as nodules or polyps, are treated by an ENT doctor or a phoniatrician, often with voice therapy from a speech and language therapist. An osteopath treats functional disorders of the body.

### When should you see an ENT specialist?

Straight away after a sudden loss of voice, and when a change in the voice lasts two weeks or more: the ENT specialist or the phoniatrician then examines the vocal cords.
